Hermit Crab Behavior

You need to know hermit crab facts to understand some of their odd behavior. Hermit crabs are attractive pets and each one of them possesses their own unique personality.

Like human, hermit crab behavior differ from one another there are those that are extremely friendly while some can pinch you the moment when you have your hands on them. There are some who are dangerous while others can be a little bit timid sometimes. But first impression never lasts, there are crabs that may be too shy to move the first time you bought them, but as the time pass by they will soon come out of their shells!

Usually, land hermit crab behavior is famous for their love to interact with one another that is why you may see them pushing each other or putting their antenna with one another.  There are times when they may even fight with one another over the hermit crab shells, if you can see one crab trying to pull the outer part of another’s shell then this is most probably what is happening. Actually, there is no reason why you should fret since this personality is natural for them. When they are done fighting, you will see that neither of them is harmed.

The problem comes in when one crab starts to be attracted with another crab which is molting, the other will dig them up and eat the other hence you should always have a special isolation tank for molters. Watch for violent behaviors and when one of your tropical friends is hurt, try to isolate him for recovery.

There is this interesting hermit crab behavior which is known as chirping, you’ll know what this is when you hear it. Crabs are not expected to create noises but hermit crabs do. There is no scientific study why they can do this but one thing is certain and that is the fact that it is quite interesting to hear your pet ‘talk’.

Normally, they are more active during nighttime; hermit crab behavior includes climbing and walking unceasingly at night. That said, you must make it certain that the lid is closely sealed before you go to your bed and sleep. Chances are, you don’t want to wake up one day and see the tank empty! When you woke up, you may see the water dish to be tipped over since these creatures enjoy digging under it; if you wish to prevent this particular hermit crab behavior then you may want to sneak the dish a bit.

Almost all hermit crabs like to eat at night so you must place just enough food to satisfy this craving. Nighttime is also their time to molt thus you have to check every day during morning if your pets started molting, if they, remove them from one another.
